Substantive editing focuses on structure, content, flow,
consistency and clarity. The editor checks that the messages are
clear and easy to follow for the intended audience and that there
are no gaps in logic. It may involve restructuring and/or rewriting
part or all of the document. |
Copy-editing focuses on detailed matters of grammar, syntax,
punctuation, sentence and paragraph length, clarity of expression,
style, and accuracy. The copy-editor will try to prevent
embarrassing errors of fact and, upon agreement, check names, dates,
quotations, etc. |
Proofreading is the final step of the editing process. It ensures
that the text is free from typographical errors and the final page
proofs are ready for printing.
