About

Sophia FileriWORDS IN GREEK is run by Sophia Fileri-Midgley, a professional with twenty-five years of diversified experience in the media and publishing industries, teaching, and the non-for-profit sector. Sophia has worked as a journalist, editor, translator and teacher, and has invested umpteen hours doing voluntary work through "Prasinos Gatos" (a hybrid charity-oriented business she set up in Athens in 2008 in order to help vulnerable social groups).

When not delving into books, stirring ideas, and putting words on paper, Sophia likes spending her time working with and for children. So far her genuine love for them and the bags of creativity, patience, perseverance, and empathy that go along with it have found expression in a wide array of activities. She has:

  • Taught ESL to children ranging from preschool to teenagers (some of them with SEN) in foreign language schools and as a private tutor,
  • Provided free private lessons in Greek and Maths to immigrant children from deprived backgrounds who were encountering difficulties coping with the school curriculum,
  • Written numerous stories on environmental topics for the largest children's magazine in Greece (To Rodi, 1994-1998),
  • Co-prepared a World Environment Day Workshop organised by the Hellenic Petroleum (June 2012) and led craft activities for children using scrap materials,
  • Given environmental presentations to nursery and primary schools as Publications Manager for WWF-Greece (1993−2002),
  • Organised highly successful fun and craft activities for groups of primary-school children.
